Trading prop-firm challenges from Vietnam: the practical picture

For a trader based in Vietnam, the prop-firm model is fully accessible in practice. The firms in the comparison above sell an online evaluation or challenge rather than a brokerage account, so there is no requirement to be a resident of any particular jurisdiction. A Vietnamese trader pays a one-off fee, attempts to hit a profit target inside the firm’s drawdown rules on a simulated account, and on passing receives a funded (still typically simulated) account plus a contractual share of the profits. Most of these firms accept sign-ups from Vietnam openly, and many run Vietnamese-language marketing, local Facebook and Telegram communities, and Vietnamese-speaking affiliates, because the country has a large and fast-growing retail trading population.

It is important to be honest about what this is. A retail prop firm is, in almost all cases, not a licensed or supervised financial institution in Vietnam. The State Bank of Vietnam and the State Securities Commission regulate banks, licensed securities companies and fund managers, but they do not authorise or oversee foreign prop-firm evaluation services, and there is no Vietnamese investor-compensation scheme that covers a challenge fee. Retail forex and CFD trading sits in a grey, largely unregulated zone for residents, and a prop-firm relationship is a contract with a foreign company under its own terms. There is no local “prop-firm regulator” to appeal to, so the firm’s published rule set, its payout history and its track record are effectively your only safeguards. Read the rules carefully before paying.

Paying the fee and receiving payouts in VND

The local currency is the Vietnamese dong (VND), but almost every prop firm prices its challenges in US dollars. This has two practical consequences a trader in Vietnam should plan for:

  • Your challenge fee is a USD amount, so the dong cost moves with the USD/VND exchange rate and you will usually pay a currency-conversion margin on top of the headline price.
  • Payouts are also typically denominated and sent in USD (or a USD stablecoin), so when you convert profits back to dong you pay a conversion cost again, on top of any fees the payment processor charges.

Because conversion happens on both legs, the effective cost of a challenge is a little higher than the sticker price, and small-balance payouts lose proportionally more to fees. It is worth checking whether a firm bills in your card’s currency or in USD, and whether it absorbs or passes on processor charges.

Payment rails that realistically work from Vietnam

The methods Vietnamese traders most commonly use to fund a challenge and withdraw payouts include:

  • International cards (Visa/Mastercard) issued by Vietnamese banks — the simplest route for paying the fee, though some local cards block or flag foreign trading-related merchants, and a foreign-transaction fee usually applies.
  • Cross-border bank transfer — possible but slower and subject to documentation; not all firms offer it for smaller accounts, and inbound SWIFT transfers can attract bank handling fees.
  • E-wallets and processors such as those built around card rails; locally dominant wallets like MoMo or ZaloPay are domestic and generally not accepted directly by foreign prop firms.
  • Crypto and stablecoins (commonly USDT) — widely used by Vietnamese traders for both paying fees and receiving payouts, because it sidesteps currency conversion friction and card declines. Note that Vietnam does not recognise crypto as a legal means of payment, so you are responsible for how you convert to and from dong, and you should keep clear records.

When comparing firms above, check that at least one rail you can actually use is supported for both the fee and the payout — some firms accept cards in but only pay out in crypto, or vice versa.

How prop-firm income is generally treated for tax in Vietnam

A profit split is a contractual payment for performance, not a return on capital you invested in a market — you are paid out of the firm’s funds for meeting targets on a simulated account. For that reason it is generally not capital gains. In most cases this kind of income is closer to self-employment, freelance or “other income” than to investment gains, and Vietnam taxes residents on worldwide income. The practical implications:

  • Foreign-sourced payouts received by a Vietnamese tax resident are, in principle, within scope of Vietnamese personal income tax, regardless of whether the money arrives by card, bank or crypto.
  • The firm will not withhold Vietnamese tax for you and usually issues no local tax document, so the record-keeping and declaration burden sits entirely with you.
  • Keep evidence of fees paid, payouts received and conversion rates, because your taxable position depends on net amounts and timing.

This is general information, not tax advice. Rules and their interpretation change, and crypto-settled income is an evolving area in Vietnam — confirm your specific position with a local tax professional before relying on any treatment.

What to check before you pay, as a Vietnam-based trader

  • Confirmation the firm accepts clients resident in Vietnam for both the challenge and the funded stage, ideally in its written terms rather than only in marketing.
  • A clear, published payout policy: minimum payout, frequency, the methods available to you locally, and any KYC documents (a Vietnamese ID or passport is usually required).
  • Whether the firm runs on a simulated/demo model end to end (most do) and how it funds payouts, so you understand where the money comes from.
  • The firm’s track record on paying out: independent reviews, community feedback in Vietnamese trading groups, and how long it has operated.
  • Total cost in dong once conversion and processor fees are added — not just the USD headline price.

Frequently asked questions

Can I legally trade a prop-firm challenge while living in Vietnam?

There is no specific Vietnamese law prohibiting an individual from buying a foreign prop-firm evaluation, and the firms in the list above generally accept Vietnamese sign-ups. However, retail forex and CFD activity sits in an unregulated grey area for residents, and the prop firm is not supervised by any Vietnamese authority. You are entering a private contract with a foreign company, with no local compensation scheme behind it, so treat the firm’s own rules and reputation as your protection.

Which currency will I pay and get paid in?

Almost all firms price challenges in US dollars and pay profit splits in USD or a USD stablecoin, not in dong. Expect a currency-conversion cost when you pay the fee and again when you convert your payout back to VND, plus any card or processor fees. Factor both legs into the real cost.

How do most Vietnamese traders receive payouts?

Crypto and stablecoins, particularly USDT, are very common because they avoid card declines and reduce conversion friction; international cards and cross-border bank transfers are also used. Check that the specific firm supports a method you can actually access from Vietnam for the withdrawal stage, since some firms restrict payout methods by region.

Do I have to pay tax on prop-firm payouts in Vietnam?

As a Vietnamese tax resident, foreign income is generally within scope of personal income tax, and a profit split is usually treated as income rather than capital gains because it is a contractual performance payment, not a market return on invested capital. The firm will not withhold or report anything locally, so you must keep your own records and declare it. Confirm the exact treatment with a Vietnamese tax adviser.

Drawdown Type Drawdown ModelFTMO uses static loss limits: a daily loss limit that resets at midnight (platform time) and an overall loss limit based on the starting balance. Both limits include floating P/L and trading costs (commissions/swaps), so equity protection matters as much as closed P/L. Drawdown ModelThe 5%ers uses fixed percentage loss limits rather than trailing equity models. Each program specifies a static maximum loss relative to the starting balance of the phase or funded stage (e.g., 5% or 10% for Bootcamp and High Stakes, 6% for Hyper Growth).Static Limits: Maximum loss is typically defined as a fixed percentage of the starting balance, and includes both closed and floating losses.Program-Specific Caps: Bootcamp and Hyper Growth are structured around relatively conservative overall loss thresholds (4–6%), while...
